4th Row Films, an award-winning documentary production
company based in New York, whose previous films have premiered on HBO,
Showtime, and Netflix, is currently producing a documentary film about
The structure of the film is around Sunday Dinners and other
times the family tries to get together.
Years ago almost every Italian-American family would gather for a
traditional Sunday Dinner even as children became older and started their own
families. But as the world gets faster
and we find ourselves spending more time communicating through our smartphones
then across a dinner table - these rituals have become increasingly rare. On the occasion when it does still happen it
is often only a small portion of the family.
The goal is to film a few families over the upcoming months
with a focus on their family meals both small (Sunday dinner where sometimes
it's the whole families and others maybe only two or three people) and large
(holidays, birthdays, special occasions) in the process hoping to learn their
family history, current story and see how they approach trying to keep their
traditions and gathering as a family alive in today's world.
The ideal family for this film would be working out the
challenges of holding on to their traditions and history as they become more
assimilated and get further away from when their family first came to America.
Of course, the film also hopes to see how each family creates their meals in
both their old school and new school incarnations.
Their current film, director Douglas Tirola's DRUNK STONED
BRILLIANT DEAD: The Story of the National Lampoon premiered at the 2015
Sundance Film Festival and is being released by Magnolia Pictures.
